Over the last decades we have seen a gradual increase in publications around Surfing Injuries, associated diseases and therapeutic use of the sport itself.

With the challenges of an ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, rapid climate change with an increase of natural disaster affecting coastal regions, rapid increase in artificial wave surf environments, an aging surfing population, increase in big wave surfing and global acknowledgement of Surfing therapeutics, there are many research questions that have not been answered or explored before.

SMI endeavours to guide research always around one core objective: “keeping the Surfer healthy and safe”

No matter if you are a novice or established researcher, SMI provides everyone the chance to participate with several activites and tools.

Surf Year Calculator

Defining exposure

The Surf Year Calculator helps to produce a numerical value of your lifetime surf exposure called Surf Years. It is essential we accepted value of exposure in science around Surfing Injuries.

A surf year (1 SY) is defined as 5 hours spent in the water surfing every week for one year. People who surf often vary their surfing habits over the years which can make it difficult to create a surf year score. This surf year calculator simplifies that task. You can enter any number of habits for everyday surfing and surf trip exposure, respectively.

You can use it as a tool for surf related research or risk assessment on your patients. Or if you ever wanted to know how much hours you’ve spent in the water.
