In lower body exercise, the percentage of the heartrate reserve is equivalent to the percentage of the oxygen consumption reserve. In upper body exercise a given heartrate reserve was found not to be equivalent to its oxygen consumption reserve. Therefore the autors conclude that individual heartrate reserve – oxygen consumption equations should be used for targeted exercise.
